THE ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA DEFENCE FORCE OCCUPIES THREE FACILITIES
ABDF FACILITIES
Headquarters (Located at Camp Blizzard)
The Headquarters of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force is located at Camp Blizzard, a facility that was formerly a US Naval base before being handed over to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in the latter part of 1995. Since then, the base has provided essential support for the headquarters staff, encompassing various functions such as training and operations, human resources, administration, finance, legal, information technology, and public affairs.
Camp Blizzard also houses several key units, including the Service and Support Unit, the 1st Antigua and Barbuda Regiment (1ABR), the Antigua & Barbuda National Cadet Corps (ABNCC), and the Airwing Unit.
The Force Medic Station, Construction and Engineering Department, Motor Pool, and Kitchen are additional facilities found at Camp Blizzard.
Crabbs Training Area (CTA)
The facility at Crabbs is essential to the training needs of the ABDF. The Base has an inherent training environment for infantry/amphibious type training away from the local population. It boasts as the only rifle range on the Island utilized not only by the ABDF and the Police Force, but is essential to the Regional Security System due to the limitation or non-existence of Ranges in other member territories. The Crabbs Training Area also has an obstacle course and serves as a secure storage area for ammunition, pyrotechnics and explosives for the ABDF , the Antigua and Barbuda Government and the Regional Security System.
ABDF Coast Guard
The main hub of the ABDF Coast Guard is located at its Base adjacent to the Main Deep-Water Harbour. From this strategic location, the Coast Guard effectively patrols the main Harbour, including the Heritage Quay Area, and monitors marine traffic along the busy west coast. The position of the Base provides a central point to respond to most search and rescue cases and to launch patrols to the various protected fishing banks. Additionally, the establishment of a second base at English Harbour enhances operational capabilities, allowing for improved surveillance and response in the eastern part of Antigua. This second base not only facilitates quicker deployments for maritime emergencies but also strengthens the Coast Guard’s presence in an area known for its historical significance and recreational boating activity. Together, these bases ensure comprehensive maritime security and environmental protection throughout the region.
