Antigua & Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) Enlistment Requirements
Joining the Antigua & Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) requires meeting specific standards to ensure that each recruit is physically, mentally, and academically prepared for military service. Below are the key requirements:
General Eligibility Requirements
- Age Range:
- Applicants must be between 18 to 25 years old.
- Citizenship:
- Must be a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda.
- Educational Qualifications:
- A minimum of six (6) CSEC subjects is required.
- Legal Record:
- Applicants must have no violations of national laws.
Medical and Physical Requirements
- Medical Assessment:
- All candidates must pass a medical examination to ensure they are in good health.
- Physical Fitness Assessment:
- Applicants must demonstrate physical endurance by passing fitness tests designed to prepare them for the demands of military training.
- No Asthma
- No Sickle Cell
- No traces of Narcotics
Service Commitment
- Enlistment is available for:
- 6 years
- 9 years
- 12 years

- Speak with a Recruiter:

- Entry Test and Documentation:

- Employment Interview:

- Attestation Ceremony:
- Take the oath and officially become part of the ABDF.
- Start Basic Recruit Training (BRT):

ABDF Academic Eligibility Criteria to become an Officer in the ABDF
What is a Commissioned Officer in the ABDF?
A commissioned officer is a member of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force who has been granted an officer’s commission by His Majesty The King, after completing officer training or receiving a direct commission due to specialized skills or education. Commissioned officers hold leadership positions and are responsible for commanding units, completing technical duties, and making strategic decisions, and are given authority over enlisted personnel and, in some cases, junior commissioned officers.
Criteria for Regular Commission
To become a Regular Commissioned Officer within the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force a candidate must have:
- Proof of Antigua & Barbuda Citizenship
- Either be a current member of the ABDF Or
- A citizen of Antigua and Barbuda with a Police Certificate with no previous Offences
- Proof of Vaccination
- Medical & Social Security Card
- Two References from retable professionals within the community (Pastor, Nurse, Doctor, Lawyer, Principal, Notary Public, Inspector of Police etc).
Academic Requirements:
- Minimum of Eight (8) CXC Subjects at General Proficiency Level AND Minimum of Four (4) passes of CXC Cape Subjects Unit 1 & 2 Inclusive of Caribbean Studies & Communication Studies
- OR an Associate’s Degree from a Recognized Education Institution from a relevant field
- OR an Undergraduate Degree from a recognized Tertiary Level Institution.
Process
Candidates seeking to become Commissioned Officers within the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force will be appointed by units or through application to the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff. Successful Candidates will move forward in the next process where they will meet with Potential Officer Selection Board where a decision will be made if a candidate meets the standard to become an Officer Cadet. Upon Gaining Appointment to become an Officer Cadet candidates can remain in this for a period of 2 years unless declares otherwise by the office of the Chief of Defence Staff.
Training
Officer Cadets based on terms of attestation, appointment and categorization will be required to undergo one or both of the following courses listed below:
- Officers Training School
- ABDF Indoctrination Course
If successful Officer Cadets with meet with the Commission Board where their eligibility and type of Commission will be decided based on their qualifications.
