Antigua and Barbuda National Cadet Corp (ABNCC)

Young people of Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda National Cadet Corp (ABNCC)

We are committed to promote Nation and Character Building through the Youth (12 – 19 yrs) of today to meet the challenges of tomorrow via:

    • Imparting basic military subjects,
    • First aid,
    • Academic and technical training,
    • Leadership and team effort toward problem solving,
    • Adventure Training (Locally, Regionally and Extra Regional), and
    • Lectures on career opportunities, morality/ethics and national service.

The ABNCC is the ABDF’s focal point for its contribution to the young people of Antigua and Barbuda. The Corp offers a sterling opportunity for the Nation’s Youth to improve themselves while preparing for the challenges of the future.

The ABNCC analogous to its Parent Unit the ABDF, remains dependent on the ABDF’s limited budget for basic requirements such as transportation, uniforms, access to computers, funding for overseas travel, an established Headquarters and the relevant furniture and office equipment. Hence the efforts of the Force in recruiting the young people in the schools have been retarded given the constraints.

Antigua Barbuda National Cadet Corps

Excellence Through Discipline

The Antigua & Barbuda National Cadet Corps (ABNCC), is a youth voluntary organization sponsored by the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF).  The primary aim is to inspire youths to achieve success in life or with a spirit of service to their country and local community, and to develop them to be model citizens. We are driven by the motto “Excellence Through Discipline”.

The Cadet Corps was introduced in Antigua in September 1965, with the establishment of the first unit at Antigua Grammar School under the guidance of the late Dr. Alfred Blackette. In 1973, the name was changed from Antigua Grammar School Cadets to Antigua and Barbuda National Cadet Corps. Lt. Donald Richards was appointed the Commandant of the first Unit.  The Cadet Corps was initially set up as an all-male institution, and subsequently saw the first intake of females from Antigua Girls High School.  Students are currently enlisted from a wide range of Secondary Schools across the island.

The Land (Infantry) Cadets are trained by the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) Training Team.  The Sea Cadet Unit was established in 2003, with the assistance of the Barbados Sea Cadets Unit, and are trained by the Antigua Barbuda Defence Force Coast Guard (ABDFCG). The Air Cadets was integrated into the ABNCC in 2022, and are trained by the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force Air Wing Unit (ABDFAW). In addition to special training for the Land, Sea, and Air Units, all Cadets receive training in subject matters not limited to; Drills, General Military Knowledge, Skills at Arms, Use of Maps and Compass, Shooting, Field Craft, Expedition Training, Physical Activities.
